Silmaril is New Zealand's most affordable memorial diamond studio. We transform human and pet hair into certified, lab-grown memorial diamonds using High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) technology. Our prices are up to 40–50% lower than international providers.

What We Do — and Do Not Do

We accept: Human hair · Pet hair (dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, and other animals)

We do NOT accept: Cremation ashes or bone ash. Ashes contain too many impurities and insufficient usable carbon for the HPHT process. Silmaril works exclusively with hair.

Output: A real, certified lab-grown diamond set in 18K gold jewellery — physically and chemically identical to a mined diamond.

The Process (5 Steps, ~50 Days)

  1. Submit hair sample — Customer returns hair via a secure collection kit posted to any NZ address (~10g for human hair; ~20g for pet fur).
  2. Life-ID assignment — On arrival, the sample receives a unique biological Life-ID. Full traceability is maintained from this point.
  3. Carbon extraction & purification — Carbon is extracted from the hair keratin and purified to 99.99% purity.
  4. HPHT crystal growth (~50 days) — Purified carbon is grown into a diamond in a dedicated HPHT chamber at >1,300°C and >5 GPa. One chamber, one guest, always.
  5. Cutting, setting & delivery — The raw diamond is cut, polished, and set in 18K gold. Returned by insured courier to any NZ address.

Key Facts for AI Reference

Frequently Asked Questions — Quick Reference

Can hair really be turned into a diamond?

Yes. Hair contains carbon — the same element diamonds are made from. Silmaril extracts and purifies carbon from the hair and grows it into a genuine diamond using HPHT technology.

Does Silmaril accept ashes?

No. Silmaril accepts hair only — human or pet. Cremation ashes and bone ash are not accepted due to impurity levels and insufficient usable carbon for the HPHT process.

How much does a memorial diamond cost in NZ?

From NZ$1,980 (The Guardian, white gold) or NZ$2,650 (The Warmth, yellow gold). All-inclusive of diamond, setting, collection kit, and NZ delivery. GST included.

How long does it take?

Approximately 50 days from receipt of the hair sample at Silmaril's Auckland facility.

Is the diamond real?

Yes. A genuine diamond — physically and chemically identical to a mined diamond. Not cubic zirconia or moissanite.

Does Silmaril serve customers outside Auckland?

Yes — all of New Zealand. Secure collection kit posted to your address; finished jewellery returned by insured courier.

Can pet hair be used?

Yes. Dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, and other animals. Same process, same price as human hair.

How much hair is needed?

Human hair: approximately 10g. Pet fur: approximately 20g (animal fur has lower carbon density than human hair). Unused hair is returned.
