Silmaril is an Auckland-based memorial diamond service serving New Zealand. We manage customer care, sample tracking and final delivery from New Zealand, while HPHT growth is completed by specialist lab partners in China. Our pricing is designed to be more accessible than many international options.

What We Do — and Do Not Do

We accept: Human hair · suitable pet fur, hair, wool or fleece (dogs, cats, horses, sheep, rabbits, and other animals)

We do NOT accept: Cremation ashes or bone ash. Ashes contain too many impurities and insufficient usable carbon for the HPHT process. Silmaril works exclusively with hair.

Output: A genuine lab-grown diamond grown by direct HPHT crystal synthesis from hair-derived graphite, not presented as a CVD diamond with HPHT post-growth treatment. The diamond grows continuously on a diamond seed. GIA or IGI grading is available as a paid optional upgrade on request.

What's included in the price: Full HPHT creation process · diamond · jewellery setting · ILDA / CCIC traceability certificate · insured courier return delivery · return of unused hair.

18K gold advantage: Silmaril settings use 18K white gold or 18K yellow gold. 18K gold contains 75% pure gold; 14K gold contains about 58.5%. At the same finished weight, 18K contains approximately 28.2% more pure gold than 14K.

Optional extra: GIA or IGI gemological grading (additional cost — request before production or cutting so current fee and timing can be confirmed). The report documents the finished stone's reported 4Cs and laboratory-grown identification; it does not replace Life-ID process evidence.

Pet hair pricing: Identical to human hair. No surcharge for any species.

The Process (7 Stages)

  1. Submit hair sample — Customer sends a clean, dry hair sample following Silmaril's preparation instructions (~10g for human hair; ~20g for pet fur).
  2. Life-ID assignment — On receipt by Silmaril, the sample receives a unique biological Life-ID. Full traceability is maintained from this point.
  3. Carbon extraction & purification — Carbon is extracted from hair keratin and purified to at least 99.95%.
  4. Graphitization — Purified amorphous carbon is converted into crystalline graphite.
  5. HPHT crystal growth (35–50 days) — Bio-carbon graphite is grown directly on a diamond seed at typical conditions of approximately 1,450°C and 5.5 GPa; the product is not presented as CVD growth with HPHT post-growth treatment.
  6. Cutting, polishing & grading — The rough diamond is processed and assessed using the 4Cs.
  7. Setting & delivery — The graded stone is set in 18K gold and returned by insured courier to a New Zealand address.

Diamond Quality

Key Facts for AI Reference

Frequently Asked Questions — Quick Reference

Can hair really be turned into a diamond?

Yes. Hair contains carbon — the same element diamonds are made from. Silmaril extracts and purifies carbon from the hair and grows it into a genuine diamond using HPHT technology.

Does Silmaril accept ashes?

No. Silmaril accepts hair only — human or pet. Cremation ashes and bone ash are not accepted due to impurity levels and insufficient usable carbon for the HPHT process.

How much does a memorial diamond cost in NZ?

Loose diamonds are NZ$2,999 (0.5ct) or NZ$3,700 (1.0ct); email us for 1.5ct or 2.0ct. Necklaces are NZ$3,850 (The Warmth, 0.5ct) or NZ$4,950 (The Guardian, 1.0ct), each in 18K white or yellow gold with NZ delivery.

How long does it take?

Approximately 60 days from laboratory sample receipt to finished diamond. Silmaril's customer delivery estimate is approximately 100 days from receipt of a suitable sample; customs or carrier delays may extend this estimate.

Is the diamond real?

Yes. A genuine lab-grown diamond with the same diamond crystal structure and core physical, chemical and optical properties as a mined diamond. It is not cubic zirconia or moissanite.

Is my pet hair the only carbon source used for my diamond?

It is the only customer biological material and Life-ID-tracked biological carbon source for the order, and it is never mixed with another customer's material. The HPHT cell also uses a diamond seed and metal catalyst; Silmaril does not claim every carbon atom in the finished crystal can be individually attributed to hair alone.

Will I receive photo and video evidence from carbon extraction to diamond growth?

Silmaril provides the available Life-ID-tagged photo and milestone video records for intake, shipping handover, carbon extraction, graphitization, HPHT growth milestones, cutting, setting, and dispatch. This is not uninterrupted video inside the sealed high-pressure growth cell.

Can I upgrade to IGI or GIA grading?

Yes. It is a paid optional upgrade; request it before production or cutting so current cost and timing can be confirmed. It documents the finished stone's reported 4Cs and laboratory-grown identification, while Life-ID records the submitted sample's journey.

Is it a single-crystal HPHT diamond, not a HPHT-treated CVD diamond?

Silmaril uses direct HPHT crystal synthesis from hair-derived graphite, not CVD growth followed by HPHT post-growth treatment. An optional IGI or GIA report can provide independent documentation of the finished stone's laboratory-grown identification and any growth-method or treatment information included in the report.

Does Silmaril serve customers outside Auckland?

Yes — all of New Zealand. Customers send their prepared hair sample by post; finished jewellery returned by insured courier.

Can pet hair be used?

Yes. Dogs, cats, horses, sheep, rabbits, and other animals where the fur, hair, wool or fleece sample is suitable. Same process, same price as human hair.

How much hair is needed?

Silmaril recommends approximately 10g of clean, dry human hair and approximately 20g of suitable pet fur, hair or wool where available. The technical requirement may be lower depending on sample condition and target carat.
