Can hair really be turned into a diamond?
Yes. Hair contains carbon — the same element that diamonds are made from. Through our HPHT process, we extract pure carbon from the hair and grow it into a genuine diamond crystal that is physically and chemically identical to a mined diamond.
How much hair is needed?
For human hair: approximately 10 grams. For pet fur: approximately 20 grams, as animal fur has lower carbon density. Any hair not consumed in the process is returned to you with the finished piece. Hair does not need to be freshly cut; preserved locks work equally well.
What types of hair can be used?
Any hair containing keratin: human head, beard, or body hair, or fur from dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, and other pets. We treat all hair — human and animal — with equal care and the same One Guest, One Chamber protocol.
How long does the process take?
Approximately 50 days from receipt of your sample: carbon purification, ~50-day HPHT growth, cutting, polishing, setting, and delivery. We'll keep you informed at each stage.
How much does hair to diamond cost in New Zealand?
From NZ$1,980 for The Guardian (18K white gold) and NZ$2,650 for The Warmth (18K yellow gold). This is up to 40–50% less than international providers such as Heart In Diamond (NZ$3,500+) or Algordanza (NZ$3,800+).
Is the diamond made only from my loved one's hair?
Absolutely. Our One Guest, One Chamber protocol guarantees that your sample is grown in its own dedicated chamber and never mixed with anyone else's material. Each sample receives a unique Life-ID on arrival.
Is the memorial diamond a real diamond?
Yes. It is a genuine diamond — carbon atoms in a cubic crystal structure, identical to mined diamonds. It is not cubic zirconia or moissanite, and will pass all standard diamond tests.
Can I get GIA or IGI certification?
Yes. GIA and IGI certification is available on request. Contact us to discuss certification options and current pricing before or after placing your order.
What colour and clarity will the diamond be?
The HPHT process typically produces diamonds in the VS–VVS clarity range and D–H colour range. Trace elements in the original hair can influence the final appearance — a natural variation that makes each stone uniquely theirs.
Do you serve customers outside Auckland?
Yes. We serve all of New Zealand. We post a secure collection kit to your address nationwide and return the finished piece by insured courier. You never need to visit us in person.
What happens to the unused hair after the process?
Any hair remaining after the carbon purification stage is carefully packaged and returned to you alongside your finished memorial diamond.
Why is Silmaril cheaper than overseas providers?
We are a New Zealand-based studio. By operating locally, we eliminate international shipping markups and intermediary margins. Our pricing is up to 40–50% lower than international competitors, without any reduction in quality or the care we take with each loved one's material.
Is my payment secure?
Yes. All orders are processed through Stripe, a globally trusted payment platform. We do not store card details. You may also enquire by email before committing to an order.
